That word

by Shailen Chugh
I told him what that word meant.
He laughed.

He thought it was funny that people like me couldn’t talk about themselves or their experiences without risking their safety and happiness.
He thought it was funny that people like me had been allowed to suffer in silence from a disease that wasn’t even mentioned until thousands had died.
He thought it was funny that people like me were rolled up into carpets and burned alive.

That’s why I’ll never say that word.
But he will; he thinks it’s funny.
Artist Statement
When this happened to me, I was shocked that people I personally knew had such little regard for human life. I couldn't believe that people genuinely thought that some people didn't deserve to live just because of who they were. I'm never going to say that word because of the hatred, homophobia, and history attached to it, and I ask that you don't say it either
