Night

by Claire Robinson
Sleeping is intimate.
My dog sleeps belly-up,
like a dead fish. Is it bad
to derive your courage
from others’ vulnerability?
Watching him, I have learned
how to sleep through the night:
do not envy the darkness.
Avoid the elements.
Howl only when you must.
