The ceiling fan spinning, around and around, While time passes around it, slowing, quickening, While you snuggle up to a stuffed bunny, pulling your blankets higher to escape potential monsters, While you jump on your bed, ignoring your mother’s threats about bedsprings and time outs, While you sneak the last piece of chocolate cake, shoveling it into your mouth before your little sister bursts through the door, While you dance with yourself to the music you supposedly hate, While you see his name pop up on your screen and your face practically glows, fingers twiddling with excitement, While you break down studying for the second life-defining test this week, While you tape shut a box filled with old t-shirts and jackets, trading them for cropped tees with bands you’ve never heard of, While you sob uncontrollably after being betrayed by your supposed friends, your extensive mascara dripping down your face, While you eat too much and cry too much, over the boyfriend that was never really yours, While you push the once invaluable ragged stuffed bunny into the back of your closet, While time passes around you, slowing, quickening, The ceiling fan spinning, around and around.
Artist Statement: My piece is a reflection of the nostalgia of being a kid: worry free and careless, and the harsh reality that is growing up. I wrote this poem when I found an old stuffed rabbit in the back of my closet and memories came flooding back, and I think it's very relatable for many people struggling to process the passage of time.
